Latest apps handle asset tracking, VoIP
Network managers can track network changes, assets and resources and report on them in greater depth, with the latest software upgrades.
The integration of asset management by LANDesk Group Ltd. will help organizations track IT investments and the finance agreements associated with them, such as leasing plans. This will help managers comply with regulations such as Basle II and Sarbanes-Oxley, claims LANDesk.
The company's software will also connect to helpdesk systems such as Remedy and Peregrine, and to the HP OpenView and IBM Tivoli management frameworks, the company said. This should make it simpler to solve user and network problems by providing more and better information.
The asset management add-on is available at half price until September 2004, making it US$5,000 per concurrent console user. The helpdesk and framework connectors are rather dearer at $25,000 each.
Entuity
Entuity Inc. meanwhile has released the latest version of its Storm network management software which tackles voice-over-IP and video streaming. Eye version 3.5 adds support for Cisco Systems Inc.'s Service Assurance Awareness protocol which allows it to monitor key factors affecting VoIP and video applications, such as jitter and latency.
Eye -- at a cool $50,000 -- produces dynamic views of a network that aid capacity planning by showing factors such as usage, availability and interdependency, the company explained. The new version can generate network status reports from a Web browser, and now also supports SuSe Linux with Red Hat Linux support on the way later this year. It already works with Windows 2000 and Solaris.
LatinSecurity
Also addressing network monitoring, but more from the security angle, is Awake v3 from Spanish developer LatinSecurity.
Priced at $690, Awake is an IP monitoring tool which registers hardware and service status changes. The company claims version 3 will make it easier for administrators to produce custom reports and receive alerts regarding failures and unauthorized changes, such as website defacements.
In particular, it includes ICMP monitoring and supports SNMP v1 and v2. LatinSecurity adds that Awake requires a Linux, FreeBSD or NetBSD server, with Solaris and HP-UX versions under development.
