Yahoo! Introduces Blog-Based Content Management for Businesses

ITworld.com, Ecommerce in Action 12/13/2005

Yahoo! and Six Apart, a developer of content management tools, have announced a partnership to offer businesses blog-based content management services capable of supporting high-traffic sites.

The announcement is a milestone in the acceptance of blogging applications as business content management tools.

Blogging is quickly moving into the mainstream as companies grow their businesses by using blogs for marketing purposes, for internal workgroups and even for content management, said Six Apart's Anil Dash.

The agreement makes the content management software part of Yahoo's Small Business Web Hosting. Six Apart has customized their Movable Type software for the Yahoo! web hosting environment, which they say offers improved performance.

By partnering with Yahoo! and customizing Movable Type specifically for their environment, we have created the best Movable Type experience on the web. Professionals now have an easy way to install, customize and expand their Movable Type weblogs, all hosted and managed by the recognized leader in website and blog hosting.

In addition to confirming Movable Type's acceptance as a business content-management tool, the partnership highlights a growing need for businesses to have enterprise-level support for blog-based systems. Yahoo's offering promises data transfer levels and response times that can scale for high-volume sites, 99.9% reliability and 24-hour customer support.

Yahoo! has created a best-in-class hosting solution for bloggers," said Rich Riley, vice president and general manager of Yahoo! Small Business. "And by integrating it with Six Aparts leading Movable Type software, we offer users a flexible, easy-to-use blogging product with unparalleled scalability.

The announcement also continues Yahoo's push into Web services that have been described as "Web 2.0" or "social media", services that are built around user-developed content. Previously, Yahoo! acquired Del.icio.us, a collaborative bookmarking site and Flickr, a site that lets users share and annotate digital images.
